An examination of issues in the fisheries sector in a small island economy: The case of Tonga AgEcon
Rohorua, Halahingano.
Tonga as a small island economy faces continuos trade deficits. The Government has identified the fisheries sector as having great potential. This paper explores current issues in the fisheries sector in Tonga. The emphasis in this paper will be on issues in fish exports from Tonga. It is perceived that barriers to trade have been a major contributing factor to the sector’s poor performance. The focus here is on the financial returns that fishermen receive and the influences that the sizes of operators and types of fish exported have on the return to the exporters/fishermen in Tonga.

An inter-sectoral economic model for optimal sustainable mangrove use in the small island economy of Tonga AgEcon
Rohorua, Halahingano; Lim, Steven.
The dependency of small island economies on natural resources coupled with the pubic nature of these resources means that sustainability is a topical issue especially when development projects offer opportunities for "better living" for communities. For a mangrove dependent community of Pangaimotu in Vavau in Tonga tourism development offers better income from employment opportunities. Yet reclaiming mangrove areas for tourism development is likely to impact on fisheries resources that have traditionally been the main form of livelihood for the community. It is argued that for small island communities, whenever development activities ignore the critical role of mangroves on fisheries resources, the wider implications to the community are also overlooked....

Export Performance in South Pacific Countries Marginally Endowed with Natural Resources: Samoa and Tonga, 1960 to 1999 AgEcon
Fleming, Euan M.; Blowes, Anita.
Stochastic dominance analysis was used to assess export performance in two Polynesian countries of similar size and structure that are both marginally endowed with natural resources: Samoa and Tonga. In general, total and agricultural export values declined over the study period in both countries, brought about by a significant decline in the value of agricultural exports while non- agricultural exports showed small increases. The one exception to this trend was in Tonga during the 1990s when squash exports brought about a revival in agricultural export values. Results suggest that these countries are likely to struggle to achieve sustainable economic development, given their limited natural resource endowments. The fisheries sector holds the key to...

Silicate diagenesis in deep-sea sediments from the Tonga forearc (SW Pacific): a strontium and Rare Earth Elements signature ArchiMer
Vitali, F; Blanc, Gerard; Toulkeridis, T; Stille, P.
Sr-87/Sr-86 isotopic ratios, strontium and Rare Earth Element concentrations obtained on volcano-sedimentary rocks and separated clay mineral and zeolite fractions reveal a formation by pore water-volcanic rock interaction for most of the hydrous silicate minerals of the Site 841 ODP collected from the Tonga forearc. Unusual strontium concentrations and isotopic ratios recorded in the Miocene tuffs associated with specific REE patterns indicate that the formation of these hydrous silicates does not follow a simple burial diagenesis model, but was related to the cooling of intruding basaltic sills in the Miocene volcano-sedimentary series. Migration of strontium into the pore water in response to the heat flow induced the formation of Sr-bearing zeolites...
